Do you feel that, a gentle rumbling in the distance? No, it’s not a washing machine, it’s a Xiaomi press conference; barreling towards us at a speed barely comprehensible to man. Scientists estimate an August 13th arrival, but don’t be afraid, there’s nothing to fear but overzealous Android skinning. That’s right – it’s almost time for MIUI 7 to make its debut.

Invites sent out to journalists have confirmed that Xiaomi intend to announce the latest version of their Android fork MIUI, which will be offered to existing and future Xiaomi phones. The original version of the software, launched over a year ago, offered a large amount of customisation but a somewhat childish, soft aesthetic.

This new version, however, is a mystery. It’s fairly safe to assume that it’ll continue with Android thanks to the software’s strong popularity in India and China, but at least one Chinese analyst thinks otherwise. Pan Juitang is on record stating that the software will instead be built upon Windows 10, enabling Xiaomi to also release a Mi Tablet featuring the software.

Otherwise, we might see an appearance of the long awaited Xiaomi Mi 5, which is said to feature a 5.2″ 1080p display, Gorilla Glass 4, a Snapdragon 810 processor, a 16MP camera with 13MP(!) front facing unit and a 3000mAh battery.

Whatever happens, it’s all due to happen on the 13th of August, so join us then as we discover what the future of Xiaomi’s software looks like. In the meantime, here’s a pretty video of MIUI 6.6
