Let’s not pretend, when we’re all alone at night with only our wildest tech fantasies to keep us warm (duvets aside, naturally), the prospect of a bendable smartphone ranks high amongst the list of unfeasable but thrilling notions. Just imagine a smartphone you could wrap around your wrist if you wanted to look stupid, or fold in half to slip into your top pocket!… If we’re being honest with ourselves, bendy smartphones aren’t exactly the most useful innovation in tech, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t the most inexplicably exciting one. That’s why a ‘leak’ (as much as any of these things are ever leaks) this week showing Xiaomi’s latest bendable touchscreen prototype sent heart races fluttering. I mean, look, it bends and responds to touch! The 30 second video showcases a smartphone screen bent to the curvature of a gentleman’s hand doing regular smartphone stuff. He launches a web browser, goes home, launches Clash of Clans, goes home and launches settings. All in all, it’s pretty unremarkable stuff, until you remember that this screen is bent, and if you’ve ever tried to bend your computer’s monitor over your knee, you’ll understand why that’s impressive. Xiaomi aren’t the only company going after the bendy smartphone prize, with Samsung earmarked to release two smartphones with bendable OLED screens in 2017, according to Bloomberg, and Lenovo and LG also working on prototype handsets with the technology. So, when can we expect the Xiaomi BENDMi Pro*? Who could say, but it seems Xiaomi have cracked the display issue. *This was a truly awful pun and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.
